Hydrating Your Base Glaze: From Powder to Perfect
Hi everyone, it's Rainy! Today we're covering one of the most fundamental skills every Five Glaze user needs to master: properly hydrating your dry glaze powder. This process transforms our formulated base glaze into a smooth, workable liquid that’s ready for dipping your pottery.
While the process is straightforward, doing it right makes all the difference in your final results. Let's walk through it step by step, with safety as our top priority.

Safety First: Essential PPE and Precautions
Before we dive into mixing, let's talk safety. Working with dry glaze powders requires some basic precautions to protect your health:
Essential Safety Gear:
- NIOSH N95 or respirator - This is non-negotiable. Ceramic powders can be harmful if inhaled (see our SDS for more information).
- Safety glasses - Protect your eyes from dust and splashes.
- Nitrile or latex gloves - Keep chemicals off your skin.
- Apron or old clothes - Glaze powders can stain.
Workspace Safety:
- Work in a well-ventilated area or use a downdraft table if available.
- Keep pets and children away from your mixing area.
- Have a damp cloth nearby for cleanup.
- Never eat, drink, or smoke while handling dry glazes.
Tools You'll Need for Perfect Hydration
The right tools make this process smoother and safer.
Essential Tools:
- Digital scale (accurate to grams)
- One-gallon bucket
- Whisk or immersion blender
- Rubber spatula for scraping sides
- Measuring container for water
Recommended for Best Results:
- 60-mesh sieve
- 80-mesh sieve
- Second bucket for sieving
Step-by-Step Hydration Process
Now let's get into the actual mixing process. Take your time with each step - rushing leads to lumps and inconsistent results.
Step 1: Measure Your Water
Weigh 2,040 grams of water into your one-gallon bucket. Using a scale instead of volume measurements ensures consistent results.
Why this specific amount? This ratio has been tested extensively with our Five Glaze formulations to give you the ideal starting consistency. You can always adjust from here.
Step 2: Add Your Base Glaze (Safety Critical!)
Put on all your PPE before opening the Five Glaze 5-pound Base bag.
Always add powder to water, never the reverse. This allows the particles to hydrate properly and keeps dust to a minimum. Slowly pour the entire contents into the bucket of water. Let the powder settle for two minutes before stirring. This waiting period makes mixing much easier.
Step 3: Add Colorant (If Included)
If your order came with a colorant packet, add it now. Pour the entire packet into the bucket—mixing will fully incorporate it.
Step 4: Mix Thoroughly
Now for the satisfying part - bringing it all together! Using your whisk, immersion blender, or spatula, begin mixing the glaze.
Mixing Tips:
- Start slowly to avoid splashing.
- Scrape the sides and bottom frequently with your spatula.
- Mix until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency.
- The texture should remind you of heavy cream or yogurt.
Don't worry if it seems too thick or thin at first - you can adjust the consistency later.
Step 5: Sieve for Smoothness (Highly Recommended)
This step is optional but makes a huge difference in your final results. Pass your mixed glaze through a 60-mesh sieve first, then through an 80-mesh sieve for the smoothest possible consistency.
Sieving Benefits:
- Removes any remaining lumps
- Ensures colorants are fully distributed
- Creates a professional, smooth application
- Prevents brush marks or texture issues
Use your spatula to work the glaze through the sieve - don't force it, but gentle pressure helps stubborn bits to pass through.
Step 6: Test Your Consistency
Your glaze should flow smoothly off your whisk but still have body to it. If you want to get technical about it, this is the perfect time to test your specific gravity (check out our dedicated post on that topic!).
Quick Visual Test: Dip a test stick or your finger (with gloves!) into the glaze. It should coat evenly and flow off smoothly without being watery (similar to heavy cream).
Step 7: Always Test Fire
Never skip this step! Apply your newly mixed glaze to a test tile or small piece and fire it. This lets you see exactly how your glaze will perform before committing to important pieces.
Troubleshooting Common Hydration Issues
Too Thick? Add water in small increments (25-50 grams at a time) and mix thoroughly between additions.
Too Thin? Let it sit - sometimes glazes thicken as the particles fully hydrate. If it's still too thin after an hour, you may need to let some water evaporate.
Lumpy Despite Mixing? Sieving will solve this. Really stubborn lumps might need to be worked through the sieve with your spatula.
Colorant Streaks? Keep mixing! Colorants sometimes take extra time to fully incorporate.
Making Your Hydration Process Foolproof
Here are my top tips for consistent results every time -
Keep Records: Note the exact amount of water you used and how the glaze performed after the first firing. This creates your personal reference library.
Room Temperature Matters: Both your water and workspace temperature affect how the glaze mixes. Consistent conditions give consistent results. Avoid freezing the glaze.
Don't Rush: That two-minute waiting period after adding powder is crucial. Use that time to clean your tools or prep your sieving setup.
Mix in Batches: If you're making multiple colors, clean all your tools thoroughly between batches to avoid contamination.
Storage and Maintenance
Store hydrated glaze in a airtight, labeled container. Stir before each use. With occasional stirring, Five Glaze stays workable for months. If it thickens over time, add a little water to restore consistency.
Ready to Create Something Amazing
Congratulations! You've just mastered one of the most important skills in ceramic glazing. With your Five Glaze properly hydrated and tested, you're ready to start creating beautiful, consistent results.
